The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review: The documentary on the Sheena Bora case is like a crime thriller, the complicated relationships surprise you
The Indrani Mukerjea Story Review: In the last scene of the docuseries based on the Sheena Bora case, a clear question is asked to Indrani Mukherjee – ‘Did you murder your daughter Sheena Bora? Without blinking, Indrani turns back and says, ‘What a stupid question?’
The camera stops on Indrani’s face for a few seconds. Captures emotion and then leaves the viewer with this question.
The same question, the answer to which CBI has been searching for the last several years. It is yet to be decided whether Sheena Bora is missing or no longer in this world. It is difficult to say what is true and what is false because every person associated with this case has his own version.
At the end of the docuseries The Indrani Mukerjea Story Buried Truth, which progresses at the pace of a thriller, it is told that all the main accused in the Sheena Bora case, Indrani Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna and driver Sheawar Rai are on bail. All of them were contacted for interviews, but only Indrani Mukherjee agreed.

What is Sheena Bora’s case?
Sheena Bora from Guwahati, who worked in Mumbai Metro has been missing since 24 April 2012. In August 2015, Mumbai Police arrested Sheena’s sister Indrani, who was later revealed to be Sheena’s mother, for kidnapping and murder.
Police allegedly recover Sheena’s body parts from the Raigarh district at the behest of Shyamvar Rai. According to the police, DNA confirms that this body is Sheena’s.
Indrani’s husband Peter Mukherjee, ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, and driver Sheawar Rai are also arrested in this case. All of them are accused of being involved in the conspiracy.
Searching for truth is not easy amidst complicated relationships
Apart from Indrani Mukherjee, the docuseries also features her and Sanjeev Khanna’s daughter Vidhi Mukherjee, Sheena’s brother Mikhail Bora (son of Indrani and Siddharth Das).
Indrani’s friends during her stay in Kolkata, media persons who covered the case, police officers and Indrani’s family. There are interviews with lawyers.
Vidhi tells her experiences regarding this case. She considers Indrani innocent. However, there came a time when Vidhi found it difficult to decide whether to take the side of her father Peter, or her mother, but ultimately, she sides with her mother because according to Vidhi, Peter’s family never accepted her.
However, her relationship with Sheena was like that of a sister. Vidhi comes across as a sensible member of this family with complicated relationships.
The words of Sheena’s brother Mikhail are confusing. On one hand, he brings tears to his eyes while recounting Indrani’s atrocities, while on the other hand, he also admits to buying an SUV with Indrani’s money, which was his dream, even though Sheena had gone missing at that time.
Mikhail is unable to give a satisfactory answer to the question of why he did not try to find his sister.
In the docuseries, Indrani presents her point of view on various aspects related to this case, according to which Sheena has distanced herself from her and has not even contacted her.
Indrani tries to establish her cordial relations with her children through old photographs.
Tight writing and Screenplay of The Indrani Mukerjea Story
The writing of the docuseries is very tight and the main story moves forward with different statements. In one scene, Indrani shows holiday photos with Sheena and Mikhail and says that she was happiest with the three children.
The scene cuts and Mikhail’s voice comes saying that this is not a holiday photo, but of the hotel in Kolkata, where Indrani had called him and made a deal that he would never call her his mother.
At one place she says that Sheena is a lot like her. The documentary covers the entire timeline of the case. Sheena’s disappearance and Rahul’s desperation to find her are shown through audio clips of Peter, Indrani, and Peter’s son Rahul Mukherjee.
Rahul was in a relationship with Sheena and both wanted to get married. In the series, the scenes have been recreated as per the requirement with the use of real footage.
Sana, who participated in Bigg Boss 17, was Indrani’s bail lawyer. At one place she also talks about the case.
The series of four episodes of approximately 45 minutes, The Indrani Mukherjee Story – Buried Truth shows the aspects related to the case as it is. It shows interviews of the concerned people and does not try to reach any conclusion anywhere.
The series reveals that Sheena’s remains are still kept in the evidence locker room of the court, as no one has claimed them yet.
