In ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ Rajat Kapoor becomes Preity Zinta’s uncle
Apart from films, Rajat has also worked in many popular TV shows. Apart from becoming an actor, Rajat’s interest in direction and scriptwriting increased, which is why he changed his career in the 1990s and started directing and writing.
His directorial career started in 1997 with ‘Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One’. He was first cast in the film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ directed by Farhan Akhtar, where he played the role of Preity Zinta’s uncle.
He received a lot of praise for this role and later he worked with Mira Nair in her film ‘Monsoon Wedding’.
Became popular with ‘Corporate’ and ‘Bheja Fry’
After this, his career gained momentum and he worked in many popular films like ‘Corporate’ and ‘Bheja Fry’. While talking about his film Monsoon Wedding in an interview, Rajat had told that he had also auditioned for many other roles in the film, which also included the roles of Man Friday and PK Dubey.
He said, ‘The biggest problem was to play the character of a big person. It’s difficult to play someone who is not your age. You make the character fake. I was 40 years old and was playing the role of a person older than 60.
It is not easy to play such roles
Rajat Kapoor further said, ‘It took us a month to figure out what to do with my hair. We also experimented a lot with gait. Apart from this, a special kind of breathing was also a part of the same thought process. It is not easy to play the role of a ‘pedophile’. I was playing the role of a person who has something to hide. For the rest, you have to let the script take you over, knowing (because of Nair) that it will be a good film.’
Rajat’s directorial debut ‘Raghu Romeo’ won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Had also won.
