Mission Raniganj Review: After seven consecutive flops (Leave OMG 2 for a second), Akshay Kumar backs with Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue, starring Parineeti Chopra, Pawan Malhotra, Ravi Kishan, Kumud Mishra, and Rajesh Sharma and many super-talented theatre artists.

Runtime – 2:14 (including end-credit)

The story is based on a real incident that took place in Raniganj, West Bengal where miners were stuck in a flooded coal mine in the year 1989.

Jaswant Singh Gill, a mining engineer known colloquially as Capsule Gill, rescued them. Later, Gill was awarded several awards including Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak (by President).

Mission Raniganj-Plot

Mission Raniganj

Jaswant Singh Gill is a fearless engineer in a Raniganj mining company who gives equal attention to his wife Nirdosh (Parineeti Chopra) and works simultaneously. His wife is mature enough to understand his responsibilities toward work. (unlike usual Bollywood typical wives who  argue about every damn action of the Protagonist.)

Later, we have a glimpse of villagers and their families to relate with them easily. like an old man who is completely dependent on his son who works in the coal mine or a father who is working overtime to make arrangements for her daughter’s marriage.

The cinematography is excellent, especially the jump cuts from villages to the coal mines.

Khufiya Review: A lovely sexual tale of OCTOPUS and CACTUS

The events become tricky when a regular blast invites a heavy flood in the Mahabir coal mines and because of late communication, 6 workers die and 65 get stuck in it.  From here on, Mission Raniganj succeeds in anticipating the audience till the very end.

Performance:

Mission Raniganj

Akshay Kumar- fits the role of a Sikh, however, have been watching him for so long that the acting seems to be at the same pace. Also, his character seems like Superman or Bahubali, who is polite, courageous, smart, good-looking, wife-carer, boss-obedient, life-saver, tea-maker, great dancer, etc etc. Apart from JS Gill, every other character behaves hopeless, helpless or against him except Pawan Malhotra. Anyways.

Parineeti Chopra- Just like Kesari, her screen time is limited but valuable,  performed well in her role.

Kumud Mishra A Total waste of talent, a chain smoker not-so-active senior officer who completely relies on Gill. Even the Dog Tiger has a better character than him.

Ravi Kishan- He appears to be overacting, but people from Bihar know that some Biharis actually overact in tough situations. My own family is one of them 😉

Dibyendu Bhattacharya- Has become the brand ambassador of grey roles. Casting Team- He can be a good man too, (don’t be racist) give him some different roles too.

Pawan Malhotra- An important character in the movie, did really well as usual.

Rest all the IMPORTANT actors like Jameel Khan, Rajesh Sharma, Veerendra Saxena, Varun Badola, etc justified their characters very efficiently.

Background Music: BGM is suspenseful and thrilling. Succeed to panic the situation.

Mission Raniganj

VFX: are cheap as it appears unreal. Even Playstation games have better flood sequences than this. According to them, If you bleed in a mine full of water, your blood color changes from red to Pink, can you digest that?

The dubbing part also looks average, it misses the lip-sync throughout the film. A lip-reader can easily spot that some dialogues were shot in English but dubbed in Hindi.

Climax: The climax was completely dedicated to Akshay Kumar, full-on machoism, spine-chilling sequences, and jaw-dropping scenes with a satisfactory conclusion.

Direction: Rustom Fame Director Tinu Suresh Desai has done a good job. The camera movement and transitions in BGM from the village to the coal pit are effective. At one place in the mine, the method of marking numbers was written in Hindi. It impresses me a lot. I think the director succeeds in creating thrill, maintaining drama, touching emotions, and delivering lots and lots of courage and inspiration to the audience.

However, the repeated usage of the word Bharat in the film and in the title, as well as the slogan “Dharti Mata Ki Jai” looked fabricated.

Still, Mission Raniganj is a watch-on-big-screen category film. It is a great tribute to our unsung hero Jaswant Singh Gill. If you are not interested in this then you can also watch it for Akshay Kumar’s heroism. Also, if you are a true movie buff, it will definitely remind you of Yash Chopra’s epic KAALA PATTHAR.
