Manoj Bajpayee decided to become an actor at the age of 9
In an interview given to Humans of Bombay, Manoj Bajpayee had openly talked about his days of struggle. He said, “I am the son of a farmer. I grew up in a village in Bihar. I went to thatched school with 5 brothers and sisters. I was a big fan of Bachchan and wanted to be like him.”
He further added “at the age of 9, I knew that acting was my destiny. I came to Delhi at the age of 17. My family didn’t know anything about my theatre. I wrote a letter to my father and told him, but he did not get angry and sent me Rs 200.”
Manoj was rejected from NSD 3 times
Manoj Bajpayee told that “I had applied in NSD, but was rejected thrice. I was close to committing suicide. My friends used to sleep with me and never leave me alone. He stayed with me till I got admission.”
When after the first shot the director said- Get out
Manoj Bajpayee, while talking about casting in Bandit Queen, had said, “That year, I was sitting at a tea stall and Tigmanshu Dhulia came on his Khatara scooter. He said Shekhar Kapur wants to cast me in Badit Queen. I went to Mumbai. The beginning was quite difficult. I was looking for work, but was not getting any role.”
He added “once an assistant director tore my photo. I lost 3 projects in a single day. After my very first shot the director told me to get out. The journey was very difficult, but I did not give up.”
Manoj won 3 National Awards
He got recognition from Ram Gopal Varma’s film Satya, released in 1998. Manoj received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for this film. After this, in 2004 he won the Special Jury Award for Pinjar.
Manoj Bajpayee won the National Award for Best Actor for the 2021 film Bhonsle.
