The first Indian film to be shot abroad was Sangam. This was a blockbuster film of 1964. The trio of Raj Kapoor, Vijayantimala, and Rajendra Kumar created a stir in the industry with a strong story.

It took 20 years to make this film. Raj Kapoor came up with the idea of making it in the 40s, but it came on screen only in the 60s.

Raj Kapoor’s Sangam was not only shot in India but for the first time, the film set was built abroad. Many film scenes were shot in beautiful places abroad including London, Paris, and Switzerland.

Many scenes of this film have also been shot in Delhi. This was Raj Kapoor’s last film with Vijayantimala. According to reports, this film did a business of around Rs 8 crore then.

Sangam was postponed because of Dilip Kumar

Raj Kapoor was planning to make this film even in the 40s. At that time, he had titled the film Gharonda. He wanted to cast Dilip Kumar and Nargis in this film, but after Dilip’s refusal, the film was canned. Then after the 60s, Raj Kapoor again produced this film and named it ‘Sangam’.

Raj Kapoor had already made up his mind that if Rajendra Kumar rejected the film, he would cast Firoz Khan, but this did not happen.

Sangam was included in the superhit films made under the banner of Raj Kapoor’s production house RK Films.

This film is one of the major classic masterpieces of film history in the world.
