12th Fail Review: Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail is more than just a weekly release movie in theatres. This is the story of the sheep and goats still deplored in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi.

If you visit to watch this movie starring Vikrant Messy, Medha Shankar, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Anant V Joshi, don’t forget to bring tissue paper with you to the theatre because I missed it many times.

12th Fail Review

The Plot

12th Fail

The story is about Manoj Kumar Sharma (Vikrant Massey) of Chambal, who belongs to a poor family, where the honest father (Harish Khanna) gets suspended from the Agriculture Department due to his honesty.

Mother (Geeta Aggarwal Sharma) is in charge of both the house and the farming. Like father, grandmother (Sarita Joshi) also follows the path of honesty.  Apart from Father, mother, and grandma, Manoj has a sister and a brother.

Manoj was going to appear for his 12th examination in 1997, but due to the transfer of new DSP, most of the student failed in exam and Manoj was one of them. Further, how did he manage to sit for the IPS interview while living in Delhi? Because, as far as I know, in order to become an IPS, you must first graduate and then before that you must have passed 12th examination. Explore 12th fail Manoj Kumar Sharma’s story

Performance

Vikrant Messy: The actor who delivered the finest performance of his career entered the role in such a way that it was impossible to separate Vikrant from Manoj. He played his character really well while preserving his USP.

Medha Shankar: Medha, who played her role as a very sweet and intellectual woman, completely got into the character of the real IRS.

Anant V Joshi: In one instance, it felt as if he would have gulped Vikrant Massey if he had gotten more significant scenes – when Manoj does not pass his third mains examination and he is sitting with Shraddha. Panday abuses him as he failed.

Geeta Aggarwal Sharma: A brilliant actress. Before the 12th fail, I watched her in OMG 2 where she again played the role of a mother but here, she performed extraordinarily in a single scene when Manoj visited her after his 3rd failure.

Anshumaan Pushkar: Last but not the least. There are born actors and there are learning actors – Anshumaan is the later one. I considered him a fairly ordinary actor when I first saw him in the web series Grahan, seeing him on the big screen today, it felt as if he was giving the last shot of his life.

Mr. Anshuman Buckle up, because there is still a lot of work to do.

Rest all the supporting cast performed up to the mark.

Writing and Dialogues

This movie is based on the book of the same name written by Anurag Pathak but it was given the form of a screenplay by Vidhu Vinod Chopra who is also the director of the film 12th Fail.

Dialogues that are still echoing in the ears-

  • Where have I started talking yet? I am from Chambal…If I become an IPS, the first letter I will sign. That will be for your suspension.

“Jaban Chalaana Shuru Kahan Kiye hain abtak, Chambal ka hoon samjha, IPS ban gaya na, to pehla letter jo sign karunga, wo tere suspensen ka hoga”

  • Becoming an IAS is not a big deal, The big thing is the chair on which you will sit. It should not increase your respect, but it should increase your respect for that chair.

“IAS banna badi baat nahin hai, badi baat yeh hai ki jis kursi par aap batenge na, use aapki izzat na ho, rather, the respect for that chair should increase with you.”

  • Their fathers are poor. They are not able to educate their children in expensive schools and colleges. But still, these people do not come empty-handed. They bring the passion that these people will also become IAS and IPS one day.

“Garib hota hai inka baap, nahin padha pata hai apnein bachho ko mahange school-college mein, lekin pata hai phir bhi yeh log Khali hath nahin aate, jazba lekar aate hain ye log bhi ek din IAS aur IPS banenge.”

Direction

It’s been a long time since I saw a well-executed direction. Vidhu Vinod Chopra took four years to make the film, which is the same amount of time it takes for an aspirant to crack civil services, and what I saw on the screen was commendable.

A few unforgettable scenes from 12th fail

After failing in the Civil Services, Gauri Bhaiya (Anshuman Pushkar) launched his own free UPSC tutoring and also established a tea stall.

Panday is seated with his English medium friend Naval in the first scene. Naval says about Manoj that these people come here like sheep and goats. There is background music in the scene; Anshuman hears him and sets the tea Kettle on a table, and the background noise abruptly stops, and his expression- you must watch.

Different types of characters are portrayed here – Gauri Bhaiya who did not pass UPSC speaks more about philosophy. On the other hand, when Manoj approaches Deep Mohan (Sam Mohan), who cleared UPSC, and asks why he is unable to clear Mains, that time Deep explains the facts.

If we ignore Hindi and English medium, then the approach of these two characters towards their studies is very different. This explains why Gauri Bhaiya failed and how Deep Mohan became an officer.

My Perception

Overall, 12th Fail is A must-watch movie with your family and friends. After watching this film, I realized that even though we have all the comforts and luxuries, we always find ourselves standing in a complaining position. This film will force you to think that our life today is still someone’s dream.
